MCP Statistics

Introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, the model context protocol (MCP) is experiencing remarkable growth across different sectors. That’s not a surprise considering the protocol’s impressive capabilities. It provides a standardized way to connect AI agents and LLMs to external data sources and tools.

This means developers can now create more intelligent AI agents with enhanced capabilities. And they don’t have to create custom integrations for it.

Today, we have thousands of MCP servers, and many new servers are expected to be released soon. Many companies have also introduced MCP clients (AI applications) that can connect seamlessly with MCP servers.

Additionally, renowned companies like Cloudflare and Vercel have also shipped support for MCP server deployment.

Since MCP is a relatively new concept, finding credible sources for MCP statistics can be challenging. That’s why we’ve compiled key MCP statistics (gathered from credible sources) in this article to give an idea of how the MCP ecosystem is growing.

The Total Number of MCP Servers

According to the Glama MCP server directory, the total number of MCP servers (as of June 2025) is over 5000 — 5,867, to be precise.

Glama is a credible MCP server directory as it verifies each server’s license. It also reviews every server submission manually to ensure accuracy. The directory is also directly integrated with Glama MCP Discord. This means when a new server is published, it is also shared with the community.

Renowned platforms like GitHub, Fetch, Playwright, Slack, Apify, and Amazon S3 have all released official MCP servers. We also have many custom-built community MCP servers, each offering unique capabilities to make things easier.

So, which MCP servers are the most popular?

According to Pulse, the most popular MCP servers of all time (as of June 2025) include:

  • GitHub with a total estimated downloads of 889k
  • Fetch (by Anthropic) with a total estimated downloads of 801k
  • Context7 (Documentation Database) with a total estimated downloads of 590k
  • Playwright Browser Automation with a total estimated downloads of 590k
  • Filesystem (by Anthropic) with a total estimated downloads of 575k

Pulse is regarded as a credible MCP information source and an MCP ecosystem hub. It is created and actively maintained by engineers deeply engaged with MCP.

The Total Number of MCP Clients

To use MCP servers, we need MCP clients. Currently, Pulse has listed 300 MCP client applications in its MCP Clients directory. The list includes AI apps and tools that can function as MCP clients. Popular MCP clients include Claude Desktop, VS Code, and Cursor.

Developers can also use MCP-Bridge to connect any app compatible with the OpenAI API to MCP.

While we don’t have as many MCP clients as MCP servers, there are still a significant number of them. We don’t necessarily need as many clients, as existing clients can currently cover common use cases. However, over time, the ecosystem may see more clients as it matures.

Note: MCP clients vary in functionality and capabilities; different clients support different MCP features.

MCP Adoption by Companies and AI Vendors

AI Vendors and companies worldwide are realizing the importance of adopting the model context protocol, including the big names.

OpenAI officially adopted the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in March 2025. It has integrated MCP across its key products, including the ChatGPT desktop app, Agents SDK, and Responses API.

Google has also adopted MCP by adding native MCP support in Gemini 2.5 Pro API and SDK.

Microsoft has added MCP support within Copilot Studio. It has also released an Azure MCP server to interact with Azure resources through MCP clients using natural language commands. It has also announced native MCP support for Windows 11 to allow for the creation of agentic AI experiences within Windows.

Additionally, renowned hosting/app deploy platforms like Cloudflare, Vercel, and Netlify now support MCP server hosting or deployment.

How Fast is MCP Growing

MCP is growing extremely quickly.

According to Pulse, the total number of MCP servers has increased from approximately 100 in November 2024 to over 4000 by May 2025.

That’s impressive growth within a short period. MCP growth can also be estimated from the number of MCP server downloads.

According to Pulse data, the estimated number of total MCP server downloads was just under 100,000 in November 2024. This number increased to 8 million by April 2025.

MCP Market Size

The MCP market is in its very early stages. It’s an emerging standard (less than a year old) rather than a mature market with established valuations.

At the moment, what defines the MCP market size is the number of MCP servers, their total downloads and integrations, the number of MCP clients, and protocol adoption by renowned companies.

From the stats we’ve discussed above, it’s clear that the number of MCP servers is growing rapidly, and companies worldwide are adopting the protocol, including big names like OpenAI, Google, and AWS.

Given the current trends, the MCP market is likely to experience significant growth in the future.

MCP SDKs

Popular programming languages like Python, Java, TypeScript, and C# all have official MCP SDKs, enabling developers to build smarter AI chatbots or agents.

There are also Kotlin and Swift MCP SDKs, allowing developers to build applications that can communicate using MCP.

MCP Challenges

By providing a standardized way to connect AI agents and LLMs to external data sources and tools, the model context protocol (MCP) is turning out to be a breakthrough in the AI space. But it has its challenges.

Security is one of the biggest concerns around MCP. Among common security issues are resource poisoning, tool poisoning, and prompt injection attacks.

Another challenge is MCP integration with existing legacy systems that don’t support MCP natively.
